June 1993

Mr Leach proposed that the Club continue for another year.Agreed. The Secretary read the minutes for the previous 12 months and these were accepted by Mr Atkinson. Mr Taylor submitted the accounts and proposed that the subscription should be held at £10. The President, Mr Travis and Vice President Alan Taylor to continue for their second year. Proposed that Bill Johnson continue as Secretary, with Gordon Macgregor as Assistant Secretary. Terry Braithwaite with assistance from John Phillipson to continue as Catering Officers. A vote of thanks was given to all the above for the sterling work during the past year. Six books were received from Dr Manley, being volume 9 of “Library History”. Proposed and accepted that one book be given to Mr Boddy for all his work put into the history of the Club. One book be given to Mr Robinson, being the senior member of the Club. One book to be held by the President and one by the Secretary. The remaining two books to be circulated amongst the members and then to be kept in the archives.

Memorandum of Agreement.

We whose names are hereunto subscribed do consent and agree to form a club in the Conservative Club Dalton in Furness to commence on the 23^rd day of June 1993 and to continue for the space of one year. Agreeable to the Rules and Directions contained in this book and we do hereby promise to conform to the same accordingly.

The President read out a letter from Arthur Bamford who regrettably declined the invitation to rejoin the Club. He also read out a letter from Lawrence Searle tendering his resignation because of business and personal commitments. The Forster Dinner is confirmed for Thursday the 8^th of July at Clarence House. Gordon Macgregor acted as auctioneer at the book sale which was enjoyed by a rapt audience of 23 members and a total of £51.75 was raised.

April 1993

The Forster Dinner to be held at Clarence House on Thursday the 8^th of July or if this night is not available, Tuesday the 6^th of July. John Phillipson will confirm the arrangements at the May meeting.

March 1993

Mr Cassley deputised for Mr Macgregor who is on holiday and drinking “Canada dry”, and why not, he’s drunk most other countries dry. Letter from Dr Manley informing that the latest issue of “Library History” has now appeared containing the article re: Dalton Book Club. He hopes to forward some copies to the Club shortly. The President then raised the subject of inviting Arthur Bamford to rejoin the Club. Whilst he would not retain his previous seniority, he would retain his former seating arrangement and not be subject to being a steward. Members agreed to the proposal and Mr Travis is to write to Arthur regarding this.

February 1993

Mr Taylor took the chair for the February meeting. He mentioned how well the Simpson Dinner had gone and this was endorsed by the members who had attended and enjoyed the dinner. Thanks for the organisation of this were due to John Phillipson.

January 1993

The President wished all members a happy and prosperous New Year, to which members good wishes were reciprocated. Menus handed out by John Phillipson for the Simpson Dinner.

December 1992

The President welcomed the return to the fold of Bill Hannah. Peter Leach presented the Club with whisky to celebrate his new contract with the B.B.C. working from home. It was also agreed he could write an article on the Book Club subject to liaison with Mr Boddy and final vetting by the Club President and members prior to publication. It was also agreed that Mr Phillipson should make arrangements for the Simpson Dinner at Chequers on Tuesday the 9^th of February 1993. An enjoyable meeting was closed and the 25 members present then tucked into a lovely buffet.

November 1992

Mr Boddy read letters received from Dr Keith Manley of the University of London seeking approval to include references to Dalton Book Club. Unanimous vote approved this. Book sale conducted and conned by Gordon Macgregor.

October 1992

£1 whip due to healthy kitty. Ladies Night to be Chequers on the 7^th November, 7.0 for 7.30pm £7.50. May be Harold Doling a little better, but not much. Harry Miller proposed for membership by Mr Phillipson.

September 1992

Bill Morgan on his retirement presented the Club with bottles of whisky and gin. Ladies night to be held at Glen Garth on the provisional date of 12^th of November. The President had met with the Conservative Club Chairman and was told they were not wanting to be rid of us but they had a problem regarding the attitude of their steward. However they are hoping to improve the decor of the room. The President then read out a letter of resignation from Robert Hodgson over the issues raised on the wearing of ties at Book Club meetings which he took to be criticism of him and his mode of dress. After much discussion a unanimous vote was given that for the time being we do not accept the resignation. Mr Phillipson is to approach Mr Hodgson in an effort to persuade him to withdraw his resignation. Should this fail the Secretary is to write to Robert in a final attempt to resolve the matter. Jim Walton said if he was the unwitting cause of this resignation he would then consider resigning. This idea was turned down unanimously by the members who said no blame attached to him whatsoever.
